Clifton Hill is an inner-city suburb about 4 km north-east of the CBD, in the City of Yarra, sharing a postcode with Fitzroy North. Along with Carlton North and Fitzroy North it has wider streets than most of inner Melbourne, a legacy of its 1860s subdivision, and in the 1880s it was described as the "Toorak of Collingwood".

Today the suburb draws renewed interest for its inner-city location and its Victorian and Edwardian housing stock. Those period homes are lovely to live in, but much of the electrical work we see in houses of this age comes down to the same thing: wiring and switchboards that were never designed for how people live now.

Wiring in Clifton Hill's Victorian and Edwardian houses

Plenty of older Melbourne homes are still running on wiring installed when a house had a fridge, a radio and a few light globes. Insulation degrades, connections loosen and load has multiplied, and deteriorating wiring gives very little warning before it becomes dangerous.

The warning signs are reliable: browned or scorched power points and switches, a fishy or burning plastic smell near an outlet or the switchboard, buzzing or crackling from a switch, lights that dim when an appliance starts, and breakers that trip on the same circuit again and again. Any burning smell or warm accessory is treated as urgent. Turn that circuit off at the switchboard and call us before using it again.

Switchboard upgrades and safety switches

Ceramic rewireable fuses with fuse wire date a board to before the 1980s in most homes, and no safety switches on power and lighting circuits usually places the installation before the mid 1990s. Period homes that haven't had a full renovation often still have both.

A modern switchboard includes Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and circuit breakers that immediately cut power when a fault is detected, greatly reducing the risk of electrical fires, shocks and equipment damage. We fit RCD protection, label every circuit and sign the upgrade off with a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Rewires and lighting in period homes

Rubber or cotton braided cable in the roof space is the clearest marker of a home due for rewiring. A full rewire replaces every circuit and the switchboard; a partial rewire replaces the worst circuits, typically kitchen, laundry and any unearthed lighting, while keeping the sound ones. We stage rewires room by room where people are living in the property, so the house is never left without power overnight.

Lighting is often done at the same time. Replacing old halogen downlights with modern LED fittings, adding dimming, or changing a layout so a kitchen bench or lounge is lit properly are all common requests. If you want to change layouts, we mark it out with you before we cut so you can see the plan on the ceiling first.
