Call us before the benchtop goes in. Induction usually needs its own circuit, and that's easier to run while the kitchen is open.

Andrew Muir

Google review, EV charger

"I found Ben through a friend who had previously used him and he was great with our electrical install. He was clear and competitive on pricing, explained everything that needed to be done through all processes and delivered a great install on our cooktop and oven combo, would definitely recommend!"

"Ben came on a weekend to help me after a switch shorted out my house. I booked him again to replace my smoke detectors. He came when he said he would and left my home spotless. Would happily recommend him - and he’s local."

Why Melbourne homes are getting off gas now

From 1 March 2027, existing Victorian homes must swap a gas hot water system for an efficient electric one when it reaches the end of its life. New homes must be all electric from 1 January 2027. A unit that still works doesn't have to come out today.

The risk is waiting until it fails. A hot water unit that dies on a cold morning means a rushed call and a rushed choice. Plan your gas to electric conversion while the old unit still runs, and you get to pick what goes in.

Replace gas hot water with electric

Gas to electric hot water is often the first step. Most homes go with a heat pump or an electric storage unit. Both need the right power supply at the spot where the unit sits.

We run the circuit, fit the isolator, connect and test the unit, and give you a Certificate of Electrical Safety. The water and gas side is plumbing work, so a licensed plumber looks after that part. We line up our visit with theirs, so the old unit isn't pulled out before the new one has power.

Replace a gas cooktop with induction

An induction cooktop isn't a plug in job. It usually needs its own circuit from the switchboard, often 20 to 32 amps, sized to the cooktop you pick. Older kitchens don't tend to have one, so we run a new circuit back to the board.

Send us the model before you buy and we'll check what it needs. We then fit the isolator, connect the cooktop and test it under load. Capping the old gas line is a job for a licensed gasfitter. Induction cooktop installation is part of our wider appliance installation service.

Add an EV charger while we're there

If an EV is in your plans, work it in now. A charger is one of the biggest loads in a home. Doing it with the rest saves a second visit and lets us plan the power once, for the whole house. See our home EV charger installation page for how it works.

We check your switchboard first

Going electric adds load. An old fuse box with no spare room often can't take it, and that's the part most people don't see coming. So every job starts with a load check.

If the board has room, we get on with it. If it doesn't, we quote a switchboard upgrade as its own line, so you see the full cost before you say yes. If we find old wiring that isn't safe to reconnect, we'll show you and quote the rewire separately.

One job at a time, or the whole house

Home electrification doesn't have to be one big job. Plenty of people start with hot water and do the kitchen when they renovate. Others want it all done together, which means fewer visits and one plan for the board.

Either way, tell us where you want to end up and we'll wire for it from the start. Once nothing in your home uses gas, ask your gas retailer about removing the meter, so you stop paying the daily supply charge.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us what gas appliances you've got. We'll tell you what your home needs first.

Gas to electric questions

Do I have to get rid of my gas hot water system?+

Not while it's still working. From 1 March 2027, existing Victorian homes must replace gas hot water with an efficient electric option when the old system reaches the end of its life. Until then, the timing is up to you.

How much will it cost, and is there a callout fee?+

It depends on what you're changing and the state of your switchboard. We look at the job first and give you a price in writing before any work starts. Booked jobs carry a $0 callout fee.

Are you going to make me upgrade my switchboard?+

Only if it can't safely carry the load. We do a load check first, show you what we found and quote any upgrade as its own line. Then it's your call.

Will I be left without hot water?+

We line up our visit with your plumber, so the old unit isn't pulled out before the new one has power. Tell us if your unit has already failed and we'll work out the fastest way through.

Can you do the gas and water side too?+

We're electricians, so we do the electrical work. Water connections and capping gas lines must be done by a licensed plumber or gasfitter. We'll tell you which part is theirs and line up our visit with them.

Do I have to change everything at once?+

No. You can do one job at a time. Tell us the end goal and we'll plan the power for it, so you don't pay to redo the work later.

Are there rebates for switching from gas to electric?+

There can be. Solar Victoria runs a hot water rebate and Victorian Energy Upgrades offers discounts on some products. Each has rules about the product, the installer and your household, and some must be sorted before the job starts. Check yours before you book.

Are you licensed and insured?+

Yes. We're A-Grade licensed, licence no. REC 37474, and insured to $20M public liability. Every job is completed to AS/NZS 3000 standards and you'll receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety (CES) once we're done.

What if something goes wrong after?+

Every job is backed by our lifetime workmanship guarantee. If something's not right, we'll come back and make it right.
